RALEIGH, N.C. – Balfour Beatty announces the completion of Wake County Public School System’s (WCPSS) new 133,000-square-foot Rex Road Elementary School campus in Holly Springs, North Carolina. Marking the 15th school Balfour Beatty has delivered for WCPSS, the nearly 20-year partnership has helped shape the educational landscape of Wake County, building learning spaces that support student success and rapid community growth.

The new Rex Road Elementary School is designed to accommodate 800 students from kindergarten through fifth grade and features modern learning environments including classroom space, learning commons, a cafeteria, gymnasium and media center. The completion of the K-12 project comes at a pivotal time for the district, which is experiencing a surge in school construction to address overcrowding and meet the demands of a rapidly growing population.

“We know the pressure our school systems are under as communities grow,” said Jeff Sandeen, president of Balfour Beatty in the Carolinas. “At Balfour Beatty, our role is to be our client’s steady partner by showing up, listening and building the planned facilities that students and teachers need to succeed. Rex Road Elementary is one of those projects where we all worked together to achieve the same goal and the results speak for itself.”

Since 2007, Balfour Beatty has completed an array of new construction and renovation projects for WCPSS schools including Southeast Raleigh Elementary, Apex Friendship High School, Buckhorn Creek Elementary, Garner Magnet High School, Green Magnet Elementary School, Green Level High School, Herbert Akins Middle School, Lacy Elementary School, Lynn Road Elementary School, Oakview Elementary, Pine Hollow Middle School, Willow Spring High School and Cary High School.

Balfour Beatty is also leading construction efforts on several other major WCPSS projects, including:

  • Athens Drive Magnet High School Additions and Renovations: As part of the Capital Improvement Program (CIP), this project includes demolition, renovation and new construction services at Athens Drive Magnet High School.
  • Wake Early College of Information & Biotechnologies (WECIB) and Parkside Middle School: This K-12 project features the construction and relocations of WECIB and Parkside Middle School into one 230,000-square-foot building. The scope also includes the delivery of athletic support facilities located off site at the Cedar Fork Elementary School.
  • Ligon Road Middle School Additions and Renovations: This project is currently in the design phase for comprehensive renovations to modernize learning spaces, improve safety and accessibility and honor the school’s historic significance.

As Wake County continues to experience rapid growth, WCPSS has opened multiple new schools this year to keep pace with rising enrollment and ensure students have access to high-quality learning environments. Balfour Beatty is proud to play a key role in the district’s transformation, leveraging its long-standing partnership and commitment to delivering innovative, future-ready educational spaces that support the evolving needs of the community.
