Balfour Beatty's Folsom office was among the Sacramento Business Journal's Best Places to Work this year this year, ranking No. 3 in the category for local offices with 25 to 49 employees. Balfour Beatty also received the Human Kindness Award at the luncheon on Aug. 20.

The Business Journal added the Human Kindness Award in recent years after noticing community involvement is a priority for many of the area's top workplaces. We evaluated the philanthropic efforts for all this year's Best Places to Work honorees. Balfour Beatty rose to the top.

That was largely due to its Green Apple Day of Service, which marks its 15th year in 2026. A school in a local district is selected to receive a beautification project. Balfour Beatty donates its time and services.

"This involves months of pre-planning, meetings, fundraising, procurement of equipment, recruitment of skilled labor and volunteers, and anything else needed to make the project a huge success," Balfour Beatty wrote in its Best Places to Work application.

Frandsen estimated the projects cost between $50,000 and $60,000. Previous Green Apple Day of Service projects have included elements such as murals, garden paths and an outdoor classroom.

The philanthropic effort fits with what the company does professionally. Balfour Beatty is a large builder of schools. "This kind of work is important to them, so therefore it's important to us," Frandsen said.

More than 10,000 students have been impacted by Green Apple Day of Service projects, according to Balfour Beatty.

The company offers opportunities for community involvement beyond its Green Apple Day of Service, including a paid volunteer day. "It's not just something we say," Frandsen said. "We're actually pushing for it."
