Press Release: NCDOT Awards Contract to Replace Castle Bridge

by North Carolina Department of Transportation

September 8, 2025

VALDESE – An old bridge in Burke County will be replaced thanks to a contract recently awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation.

Balfour Beatty Construction of Wilmington earned the $30.8 million contract to replace Castle Bridge, which connects Connelly Springs Boulevard in Caldwell County with Malcolm Boulevard in Burke County over Lake Rhodhiss.

Construction can begin as early as Sept. 29, and the contract calls for completion by March 30, 2029. During construction, vehicles will continue to utilize the existing 64-year-old bridge with its current traffic pattern.

The new bridge will be built just west — upstream — of the current structure. The new bridge will be built to modern standards with one 12-foot lane in each direction plus a protected 10-foot-wide multi-use path.

“It’s been a long road to get to this point, and I’m delighted that everybody will soon see construction,” Division 13 Engineer Tim Anderson said. “We sought input from local municipalities, citizens, engineers and others on the bridge design with a focus on safety and mobility during and after construction.”
