Lewisville ISD Inaugural Career Day Out

by Balfour Beatty

March 13, 2019

In partnership with Lewisville Independent School District, Balfour Beatty's shared services and operation teams in Texas hosted five students as part of the district’s inaugural Career Day Out.

The program’s mission is to help shape the upcoming workforce by surrounding students with a community of support in preparation for the future they create. The teams facilitated an engaging experience showcasing the boundless opportunities available in our industry.

Students spent time with Balfour Beatty's shared services finance department, the Texas finance department, and with the Texas operations team at Mill Street Elementary School.

The hands-on workshops included:

  • The Shared Services team of Nina Abraham, Kim Davidson, Lauren Menchaca, Jana Novelen, and Miranda Yrlas provided an office tour, showed introductory company videos, discussed Excel functionality, and described how the accounting and finance teams produce data used by the company to make sound business decisions. The team also covered the significance of networking, intern and career opportunities, as well as the importance of relationship building. The visit was made complete with a few rounds of the fast-paced dice game Tenzi, a department tradition.
  • Nathan Evans, with Texas finance, also provided an office tour, a viewing of some company videos, and a briefing on our company history, key market sectors, and the many communities in which we build. Career path opportunities were discussed, which included a chat with Todd Moffat, senior vice president, and chief financial officer for the Texas group. The day was topped off by joining the shared services team for Tenzi.
  • The Mill Street Elementary School project team of Scott Graham, Crystal Hernandez, Christina Stotts, and Ryan White started the day with a Zero Harm safety orientation, followed by a career path discussion centered on the different opportunities available in the industry. During this presentation, each team member shared their unique career path story. Afterward, students were treated to a job site tour and a brief introduction on how to read plans and specifications.

This dynamic mentoring program deepens students' understanding of industry career opportunities while providing insight into the tools and techniques used by our professionals in their areas of expertise.

Thank you to all who participated, your efforts have contributed to the development of our next generation of construction leaders!
