Paying respectful homage to the original buildings and elevating the school’s presence along well-trafficked El Cajon Boulevard in San Diego, the Hoover High School project stands as a welcoming new threshold to the campus. This 85,000-square-foot Lease-Leaseback project included the demolition of the original 1930s theater and construction of a new theater and three-story classroom building on an active, 2,200-student campus. Spanish architecture meets old-fashioned schoolhouse style, honoring the school’s history with modern, energy efficient design. The technologically advanced theater is a valuable addition to the school and the local community, equipped to host a range of high school activities and public events. In addition to 20 classrooms, the threestory building houses administrative and counseling offices, a student store, and various other staff facilities.
“In my 17 years serving as a Construction Manager at SDUSD, I can honestly say that Balfour Beatty is the best contractor I have worked with... The Hoover High School project is almost complete, and it appears certain to be delivered before the contract required date of August 5. We look forward to working with Balfour Beatty again soon on future projects!” - Rick Mortazavi, Lead Construction Manager | SDUSD
Time Saved: Four (4) Weeks (minimum)
Item: Shoring for the high stage roof and high/low galleries
When it came to shoring on the Hoover High School project, building per plan would have taken a significant amount of time and money. To overcome this challenge and save time, the team installed post shoring to support the galleries and high roof, allowing them to build out all of the catwalks/ galleries before the high roof was poured. The installation enabled the team to build out the three galleries and roof beams simultaneously and use the crane to set the entire steel stage, followed by the installation of decking and pour of the high roof. This ultimately helped streamline the flow of structural steel on the project, saving a minimum of four (4) weeks on the schedule.
It’s always our goal to save our district partners money by working creatively and collaboratively to finish early. One of the biggest savings the team accomplished at Hoover High School was leveraging our experienced staff and resources to work in close collaboration with SDUSD and Hoover Principal to complete the project in 24 months vs. the 27 provided by the District. This was accepted by the District, saving SDUSD $300,000.
"The Hoover Team and community are thrilled. It’s the best looking building in City Heights and I can’t wait for our students to walk through the halls. Incredible team and leadership on the Balfour Beatty side. I feel very fortunate to have worked with you! As Rick said, not only do I hope you continue with projects in SDUSD, but at Hoover specifically. Your work stands out above the rest. Thank you!" - Jason, Hoover Principal
