Balfour Beatty Construction's Golf Outing Raises Over $100,000 To Support the 12th Annual Sharefest Workday
April 23, 2015
TORRANCE, Calif. - Balfour Beatty Construction and Sharefest recently hosted 160 golfers at their third annual Golf Classic raising over $100,000 in support of
Sharefest’s 12th annual Workday
. Participants included Balfour Beatty Construction employees and industry partners who played the Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach, Calif. on April 17. Sharefest’s Workday is an annual event that mobilizes thousands of volunteers throughout Los Angeles County to complete tangible work projects that will change the quality of life for its residents.
Money raised from the golf outing will be used to help beautify and improve school campuses in the Redondo, Torrance, Culver City and Wiseburn School Districts during Sharefest’s 2015 Workday taking place on Saturday, May 2. That’s when over 350 Balfour Beatty Construction employees, contractors, vendors, site staff, students, family, and community members will volunteer their time to complete the beautification projects, which are all provided at no cost to the schools.
This is the sixth year Balfour Beatty Construction has joined Sharefest for a hands-on partnership and the third year to provide additional financial support through the Balfour Beatty Construction / Sharefest Golf Classic. The funds raised from the event will also benefit Sharefest’s Youth Development Academy, a summer program offering academic and extracurricular activities to underserved middle and high school students, as well as for the creation of a new scholarship program for students interested in the construction industry.
“I’m amazed how every year we’ve been able to improve upon the last,” said John Bernardy, senior vice president, Balfour Beatty Construction. “Thanks to our team’s hard work and our partners’ generosity, we raised $100,050 this year and nearly $250,000 in total for Sharefest since we started our golf tournaments. This year is especially exciting because we’re not only helping improve our neighborhoods, we’re also giving more than a dozen scholarships to aspiring students seeking careers in our industry. We’re proud to be part of a construction community that is dedicated to making a difference.”
Chad Mayer, executive director of Sharefest was also appreciative of the effort. “Balfour Beatty Construction models what it means to give back to the communities they work in,” said Mayer. “We are thrilled to partner with them again this year for Workday, and their generous support and strong volunteer workforce will positively impact learning through revitalized facilities at these schools.”
