Balfour Beatty Construction Honored with 2016 Engineering News-Record Texas & Louisiana Regional Best Project Award
August 31, 2016
HOUSTON – Balfour Beatty Construction has been honored with a prestigious regional award for the Noble Energy Center 2 (NEC 2) project. Engineering News-Record Texas & Louisana (ENR TX & LA) recognized the project with its ‘Best Project’ award in the Interiors category. ENR TX & LA is a leading trade magazine dedicated to honoring the best construction projects across Texas and Louisiana.
In August of 2013, Trammell Crow, the project developer, began construction on Noble Energy Center, a 970,000-square foot build-to-suit corporate campus. At the time of construction of the NEC 2 interiors—a 12-story, 240,000-square-foot build out in a 20-story building and an adjacent 7,500-square-foot Town Hall —more than 900 employees occupied the new Noble Energy Center I (NEC I). NEC 2 was completed in May 2015 for the remaining local employees—bringing all of Noble’s Houston-based employees together.
“We are honored to be recognized for our team’s work on the NEC 2 project,” said Kim Barrow, project executive at Balfour Beatty Construction. “The completion of NEC 2 was the culmination of a multi-year plan to not only build a corporate campus for Noble Energy, but the creation of an environment where collaboration would create synergies amongst different groups; leading to greater business success.”
The use of Lean construction principles and technologies such as BIM360, centralized digital document management, pull planning, prefabrication and off-site manufacturing helped guide impressive design, value engineering and construction decisions in light of the fixed budget and extremely accelerated schedule. This collaboration delivered highly effective results and contributed greatly to the project’s financial and scheduling success.
ENR TX & LA received more than 92 entries from which 35 projects were chosen based on teamwork, safety, overcoming challenges, innovation, and quality. The project team will be honored at the Best Projects award event on October 19 in Houston.
