Balfour Beatty Construction Honored by AGC of Georgia for 131 Ponce Project with Zero Lost Time Accidents
April 22, 2015
ATLANTA – Balfour Beatty Construction’s 131 Ponce Apartments project has been awarded first place honors in the General Contractor Building category and earned merit honors in Best Sustainable Building Practices in the 2015
Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Georgia
Build Georgia Awards Program. An annual awards program, AGC Georgia’s Build Georgia Awards recognize general contractor members and their construction teams for outstanding performance on some of the state’s most remarkable projects.
Achieving minimal punch and zero lost time accidents is a great achievement on any project, but for the luxury, 280-unit 131 Ponce project, it’s exceptional. Located on a tight Midtown site bordering a 148-year-old church and four Georgia Department of Transportation streets, the project required innovative demolition, staging, logistics, and sequencing. To maintain the historical integrity of the project site, which previously was home to the first office building designed by well-known, modernist architect I.M. Pei, the Balfour Beatty team closely collaborated with Faison, the project’s developer, and the design team from Davis Architects. As a result, Balfour Beatty resurrected a portion of the Pei building’s façade and incorporated it into the new development to create a post-modern development that pays homage to the original design.
“We’re honored to be recognized by the AGC of Georgia for the 131 Ponce project, which is an outstanding example of the custom building solutions, innovation and operational excellence our team delivers,” said Al Petrangeli, Balfour Beatty Construction’s Georgia Division president. “Success on this project was driven through value-added preconstruction services, lean scheduling, and strategic subcontractor selection and management. To achieve minimal punch and zero lost time accidents is a great result, and a testament to our unwavering commitment to serving our clients and accepting nothing less than zero harm on our projects.”
An industry-representative panel of judges evaluated the award submissions, assessing each project’s complexity, use of innovative construction techniques, and client and community satisfaction. The project and team will be honored at AGC’s Annual Convention Award Breakfast in Amelia Island, Florida on June 9, 2015. Faison acted as the developer of the project and Davis Architects was the designer.
