General contractor wins prestigious Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Award and takes top honors in the Construction Management Renovation category
DALLAS – Balfour Beatty Construction has been recognized by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) with the Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Award and the Alliant Build America Award in the Construction Management Renovation category. The Alliant Build America awards honor AGC members who build the nation's most impressive construction projects ranging across the building, highway and transportation, utility infrastructure, and federal and heavy divisions.
AGC’s Build America Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Award
Balfour Beatty Construction was recognized with AGC’s Build America Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Award for its role in building the $221 million Las Colinas Woman’s Detention and Reentry Facility in Santee, Calif. This AGC national award is presented annually to a project, or projects, that epitomize the principles of partnering and celebrates the construction industry’s finest.
From project’s inception, the facility was the result of a true design-build competition with limited specifications that described the project. By collaborating with the key stakeholders, the project evolved from a basic concept to the design-build team’s forward-thinking vision of a 28-building, 464,000-square-foot complex that now serves as an innovative example of the rehabilitative benefits this environment delivers for inmates and the county. The project was designed by executive architect Kaplan McLaughlin Diaz (KMD) of San Francisco and associate architect HMC of San Diego.
“Having participated in the partnering sessions, I can attest to the collective team’s true commitment to the partnering process on this unique and innovative project,” said Brian Cahill, president of Balfour Beatty Construction’s California Division. “Despite the group’s large size, we formed a powerful team that was aligned with the owner’s objectives and remained mindful of the county’s rehabilitative goals for inmates. We met every challenge head on and the results speak for themselves – an award-winning design that was built safely, on schedule, on original budget, and with a zero punch list. We are all proud to have been a part of this project and its success is a testament the team’s commitment to each other, the design-build process and partnering at its best.”
AGC Alliant Build America Award / Construction Management Renovation
Balfour Beatty Construction, and its BARC joint venture partners including Azteca Enterprises, H.J. Russell & Company, and CARCON Industries, also was honored with the AGC’s Alliant Build America Award in the Construction Management Renovation category for its role as managing partner on the $140 million, 400,000-square-foot Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Terminal A Phase II Renewal and Improvement Program.
To appreciate the complexity of performing a major renovation at the world’s third largest airport, consider that some 14 million passengers passed safely and uninterrupted through DFW Airport’s Terminal A while construction was in full swing. During construction, the BARC team contended with the airport’s need to maintain 24/7 operations, as well as security and site access for both personnel and construction materials. Team members also performed abatement and construction above operational back-of-house areas and continuously overcame unforeseen challenges.
A carefully mapped plan allowed the team to keep the airport safely operational during 1.3 million worker-hours while renovating all back-of-house systems. BARC’s safety program centered on a zero-harm approach in which processes and procedures were proactive and integral to operations.
“We are honored to receive this prestigious award which acknowledges the great work being done by our crews every day,” said Karl Joeris, vice president, Balfour Beatty Construction. “We are proud of our team, and we are appreciative to the AGC and our peers for recognizing us with an apex of industry awards.”
