Building with our Hearts and our Hands to Support Future Homeowners of Tomorrow

For the past two years, teammates in the San Diego and Newport Beach offices have banded together to participate in San Diego Habitat for Humanity’s yearly Women Build event.  This year, 19 women volunteers were recruited through our Employee Resource Group, “Connecting Women,” to not only raise money in support of Habitat for Humanity’s vision for a world where everyone has a decent place to live, but to also don hard hats, gloves and boots and be among one of the of first groups of volunteers to help build 11 new homes in the Logan Heights neighborhood of San Diego—a project San Diego Habitat for Humanity is committed to completing over the next several years.

On the day of this year’s event, Balfour Beatty volunteers nailed together pieces of wood to create wall frames, sawed wood, and built stairs to name a few of the many building tasks. The event is a tremendous team-building activity, and also fosters a great sense of pride as the women experience the “bones” of a house being formed in a single day.  Teammates proudly work alongside women from throughout the area and appreciate the opportunity to give back to communities where we live, work and play.  The volunteers are tired by the end of the day; however, nothing can compare to the extreme sense of gratification and empowerment that comes with accomplishing this hard work, especially knowing that this work has helped families become one step closer to homeownership.

We are proud to not only participate in this worthy cause, but to also raise a record-setting $20,000 this year through various fund-raising efforts to support San Diego Habitat for Humanity.
