Across the construction industry, the focus has grown on ensuring the buildings we use are environmentally responsible and sustainable. In 2000, the United States Green Building Coalition (USGBC) established the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System. The LEED system provides an integrated design guideline and a standard for defining and measuring "green".
In April 2009, USGBC launched LEED v3, an enhanced version of its green rating system. Simply put, LEED v3 raises the bar for both projects and people seeking to meet LEED requirements.
Highlights of the new program:
- Sustainability credits are weighted by their environmental impact
- LEED Accredited Professionals must now specialize in one of five areas: Operations and Maintenance, Homes, Building Design and Construction, Interior Design and Construction or Neighborhood Development
- To maintain accreditation, LEED Accredited Professionals must participate in USGBC–certified continuing education programs
Before you begin your next project or seek LEED accreditation, visit the USGBC’s LEED site to learn more about the new LEED standards.
