Barnhart Balfour Beatty Changes Name, expands Geographic Focus, and Moves into New Space
September 27, 2011
Eric Stenman tapped to extend company’s reach as Balfour Beatty Construction’s Regional CEO in the Southwest
(SAN DIEGO and DALLAS – September 27, 2011) – Robert Van Cleave, chairman and CEO of Balfour Beatty Construction, announced today the promotion of Eric Stenman to the position of Regional CEO for the company’s newly named Southwest Region. The regional formation comes as the next step in the continued evolution of the company’s San Diego operations, which formerly operated under the name Barnhart Balfour Beatty. Becoming the company’s flagship in the Southwest, Barnhart Balfour Beatty will begin operating as Balfour Beatty Construction in conjunction with their move to new office space in San Diego later this month.
Marking the final step in a three-year transition (after its strategic acquisition by Balfour Beatty in 2008), Barnhart’s name change will allow them to more fully leverage the national scale and resources of the Balfour Beatty Construction brand, while maintaining long-standing relationships and a reputation as a trusted contractor in Southern California.
“Our goal is to position ourselves for growth beyond what we could do as Barnhart alone,” said Eric Stenman, regional CEO for Balfour Beatty Construction in the southwest. “Fully embracing our Balfour Beatty Construction identity gives us the ability to extend our own geographic reach, while also leveraging the national resources, subject matter experts, and financial depth of the larger company. But at our core, we remain committed to local relationships that were built upon tackling projects large and small.”
The new San Diego office, located at 10620 Treena Street, Suite 300, San Diego, CA 92131, will serve as the headquarters for the southwest region of Balfour Beatty Construction. In addition to the new headquarters building, Balfour Beatty Construction will maintain all other local satellite offices in Oxnard, Palm Desert, Riverside and Tustin. All 310 staff members will continue to report to their local offices, as before.
“Balfour Beatty Construction operates in a very decentralized way, which translates to local decision making for the employees and clients in our southwest region,” said Robert C. Van Cleave, company chairman and chief executive officer. “Since day one of our relationship with the team in San Diego, we’ve been impressed by how aligned we are with culture, values, and a shared drive for innovation and service excellence. We expect this to only deepen as we grow even further together throughout the southwest.”
The power of this local/national connection was validated recently when the company leveraged shared expertise to win the $221 million Women’s Detention Facility in San Diego County. Together, the companies’ combined experience brought to the client more than 30 years of local subcontractor and market relationships, together with lessons learned on 55 prisons, jails, and courthouses across the country.
Balfour Beatty Construction’s track record of growth across the U.S. follows this carefully orchestrated strategy – one which focuses first on strong local relationships, then on aligned culture and service commitment, and finally on maximizing opportunities which leverage the strength of the national and global Balfour Beatty brand.
