Barnhart and Charter join Balfour Beatty Construction
On January 1, 2010, San Diego-based Barnhart Inc. and Dallas-based Charter Builders, Ltd. became part of the Balfour Beatty Construction family of companies. The move comes as an effort to align London-based Balfour Beatty plc’s U.S. operations, uniting the contracting and CM-at-Risk expertise of Balfour Beatty Construction, Charter, and Barnhart.

Founded in 1983, Barnhart is headquartered in San Diego, with four offices throughout southern California. The company has successfully built and managed hundreds of projects throughout the Southwest, and is recognized by Engineering-News Record as the sixth largest Education Builder in the U.S., and is a 2008 Grand Safety Award winner from the Associated General Contractors of America. Barnhart employs 323 people, and, in 2009, earned approximately $370 million in revenue.
Since its founding in 1971, Dallas-based Charter Builders, Ltd. has completed more than 500 projects, with a geographic focus on Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana. The company has twice been named the AIA Dallas’ Contractor of the Year and is a 2009 AGC National Construction Safety Excellence Award winner. Charter’s revenue for 2009 is approximately$375 million and the company employs 191 people.
Barnhart and Charter will operate as wholly-owned subsidiaries of Balfour Beatty Construction, and as such, their chief executive officers,
Eric Stenman and
Charles DeVoe will serve on Balfour Beatty Construction’s executive leadership team.
