Barnhart Balfour Beatty and U.S. Marines hold opening ceremony for Wounded Warrior Barracks
March 25, 2010
The U.S. Marine Corps and design-builder Barnhart Balfour Beatty held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 25 for the new, $24-million Wounded Warrior Barracks at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California.
Some 25 wounded Marines and Sailors assigned to Wounded Warrior Battalion West were in the audience of more than 200 guests.
Construction began a year ago on the 66,000-SF, two-story new home that features 100 semi-private suites for men and women of all ranks. The injured and ill Marines and Sailors will have views of Lake O’Neill and the surrounding hillsides while they recover in a facility that features gaming areas, computer alcoves, outdoor athletic facilities, therapeutic gardens and nature trails.
Energy and water savings at the Wounded Warrior Barracks will exceed federal requirements and the entire project complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Additional facilities being built at the complex include a Wounded Warrior Headquarters and a Wounded Warrior Hope and Care Center, both being built by Barnhart Balfour Beatty under a separate $29.5-million contract award. These facilities are expected to be completed by October 2011.
All of the Wounded Warrior facilities were designed by architect Cass, Sowatsky, Chapman & Associates of San Diego.
Barnhart staff working on the Wounded Warrior campus includes Sean Hulen, Vice President; Charles McArthur, Senior Project Manager; and Dave Christensen, General Superintendent.
Wounded Warrior Battalion West provides assistance to wounded, injured, and ill Marines and Sailors and their family members throughout the phases of recovery. More information is available at www.bnwest.woundedwarriorregiment.org.
