All BBC projects undergoing carbon footprint measurement
For the past two years, both the national Green Task Team and divisional green task teams have been working to improve our company’s performance around sustainability and environmental impact. While progress has been made with a lot of smaller initiatives, there is a very big initiative rolling out across Balfour Beatty Construction.
Currently, our company is taking a baseline measurement of the carbon footprint impact of our jobsite operations, the heart of what we do in our business. The measurement of carbon footprinting captures “the impact that human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced, as measured in units of carbon dioxide.” For Balfour Beatty, this includes the waste generation, transportation impacts, and energy consumption produced by our projects across the United States.
The measurement tool assesses:
- Carbon Inventory: greenhouse gases generated by energy use, transportation, relevant solid and liquid waste streams, and direct emissions to the atmosphere
- Water Use: volume, usages and conservation efforts for potable and non-potable water
- Waste Stream Generation: waste type, volume, and current recycling practices
Our carbon footprint is being created in conjunction with an environmental consultant (Eco Advisors, Inc) and will be completed using ISO 14064 Carbon inventory standards.
