Spring Groundbreaking For Arts Center

October 15, 2009

Construction is slated to begin in the spring for the planned $425 million Dr. P. Phillips Orlando Performing Arts Center.

The center's board on Oct. 15 approved plans for a phased construction starting with the 2,700–seat Disney Theater and 300–seat community theater, a news release said.

Funding has been secured for that first phase, the arts center said.

Future phases will include a 1,700–seat flexible "multiform" hall, once funding has been raised, the arts center said.

A general contractor has yet to be selected for the project. The Orlando office of Dallas-based Balfour Beatty Construction is overseeing pre–construction with local minority–owned businesses such as R.L. Burns Inc., Rey Group Inc. and Forte Young Inc.

The Orlando City Commission in August approved $70M worth of bonds to finance the acquisition, demolition, construction and other initial improvements on the site.
