Barnhart Balfour Beatty receives U.S. Navy safety award

June 21, 2011

Barnhart Balfour Beatty has received a safety award from the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest for 100,000 accident-free labor hours during the $22.7-million renovation of two Bachelor Enlisted Quarters (BEQs) at Naval Base Coronado, Calif.

NAVFAC presented the company with a certificate of achievement and NAVFAC safety coins. The safety coin is a special award that recognizes safety-conscience contractors who excel during project execution and achieve high marks in safety audits. Each of the seven Barnhart Balfour Beatty team members who contributed to this achievement was awarded a safety coin.

In May 2010, Barnhart Balfour Beatty received an award from NAVFAC Southwest for 100,000 accident-free labor hours during the construction of the $63.7-million Weapons and Armament Technology Center at the Naval Air Weapons Station (NAWS) in China Lake, Calif. The company went on to achieve 200,000 hours of accident-free production by the time that project was completed in October 2010.

Barnhart Balfour Beatty president Eric Stenman said, “Barnhart Balfour Beatty’s safety program of ‘Zero Harm’ has four goals  Zero fatalities, Zero major injuries, Zero Harm to the public and Zero Harm to the environment. Receipt of this award and the seven safety coins is a reflection of our safety culture.”

Barnhart Balfour Beatty achieved the most recent 100,000-hour milestone during the reconstruction of BEQ 783, which was delivered to the Navy in February, and BEQ 787, which will be finished in September. The two seven-story buildings each contain 252 living units for enlisted servicemen who support Naval surface and aviation units of the Pacific Fleet.

The buildings, originally constructed in the 1970s, are undergoing a total renovation, including new utilities and HVAC equipment. They have been designed to LEED-certified environmental standards and include building-integrated photovoltaic arrays installed on their roofs for maximum solar energy capture.

Barnhart Balfour Beatty’s design partner is Architects Delawie Wilkes Rodrigues Barker of San Diego. The Barnhart Balfour Beatty team includes Dave Roach, senior vice president; Mark Sarles and Chris Drinko, project managers; and Pat Anderson, project superintendent.
