"Operation Hope Floats" team assists Air Force family with special needs child

Employees at our Travis AFB Military Housing project heard about the challenges facing a Travis family and others nearby with special needs -- and they set out on an extraordinary mission to lend a helping hand.

Balfour Beatty Construction and Balfour Beatty Communities joined forces to raise money and build ADA modifications for the Lemm family. The Lemms, who live on base, were facing a challenge with limitations of their "ADA-compliant" bathtub, making it difficult for Tammie Lemm to care for her 15-year-old daughter, Kosandra, "Kassie," who has severe cerebral palsy.

Subcontractors working at Travis enthusiastically stepped up to help, and the bathroom remodel was completed in just 10 days, just three days before TSgt Wayne Lemm, Kassie's father, deployed to the Middle East.

Lead Superintendent Chris Griffin's love of fishing spurred an idea that helped "cast" the Lemm project forward. A 7-Series Tin Cup Fishing Tournament was launched to raise money to help special needs families on base and in surrounding communities. Proceeds from the first two tournaments, held March 7 and April 18 at nearby Lake Berryessa, benefited the Lemm project.
