MARIA THOMPSON
Maria Thompson, senior project manager in Fairfax, Virginia, was a key Balfour Beatty Construction team member on the project to build the Defense Threat Reduction Center, completed in the fall of 2005. The Center serves as home to the government agency that works to locate weapons of mass destruction.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was the primary client, but there was involvement from different government agencies with various political and monetary stakes in the project. “Managing the needs of so many players made this a great opportunity for us to foster a strong partnership approach,” said Maria. “That’s the way we like to handle things with every single client we work with.”
Maria said she felt a surge of patriotism when she toured the new building. “When our team attended the ribbon-cutting ceremonies, we saw demonstrations of what the agency does. For me, it was incredible to be part of something that supports our national security.”
“I must admit, though, that I take great pride in all of the projects I work on, whether they are $1 million renovations or multi-million-dollar buildings like this one,” Maria continued. “When the client is satisfied, we’re satisfied. To the client, their building – no matter what size – is the most important thing we’re working on at that time.”
