Sometimes life moves in small but significant circles. Balfour Beatty Construction has partnered with Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, on more than 10 major projects in the past 20 years. Along the way, we’ve organized and sponsored the Children’s Golf Classic for the past 12 consecutive years (one of the largest such events in Dallas), raising nearly $1.5 million for the hospital, as well as sponsoring Family Night at Six Flags each year to benefit Children’s Medical Center.
On each project, Balfour Beatty employees saw their work as a chance to help bring health to children. We never expected that one of the lives our work might touch might be our own.
In 2007, doctors at Children’s Medical Center told Elizabeth Murray, a Balfour Beatty employee that Kyle, her three–year–old son, had brain cancer. They promptly began aggressive cancer treatment at the hospital.
When her fellow employees learned about the diagnosis, they organized “Kyle’s Krew” and raised more than $20,000 for the National Brain Tumor
Foundation in his name by selling t–shirts, Kyle’s Krew bracelets, and participating in the Angel Adventure Walk. In 2008, Kyle and the Murray family were selected for a
“Make–a–Wish” trip to Disney World, where they stayed at Give Kids The World Village, facilities that were built with donated construction services from Balfour Beatty Construction. And when the Murrays arrived at GKTW, they discovered a surprising gift from Orlando Balfour Beatty employees: hardhats filled with extra tour tickets, entertainment dollars, and special treats and gifts for the children.
